Let’s talk windows! 🪟 👇

Here’s how I did it:

✨ *Prep is key, trust me. Skip it, and it’ll show.*

1️⃣ Remove the sealant:I had some on the window sill that had to go—paint doesn’t stick to sealant! (Trust me I’ve tried) It’s there for a reason though, so you’ll need to reseal after painting. You can get sealant in different colors to match your paint or just go with clear. I removed the sealant using a scraper, if yours is a bit stubborn then sealant remover will do the trick 👍🏻

2️⃣ Light sanding: I used a fine/medium grit sanding block (if you’re using sandpaper, don’t go lower than 120 grit). You want to *buff*, not scratch the surface—this helps the paint stick. Even if the paint says sanding isn’t needed, it’s always worth the extra step.

3️⃣ Clean up with sugar soap: Get rid of dust, dirt, and grime. The last thing you want is to be painting over muck!

4️⃣ Dry it down:I wiped it all down with a microfiber cloth to make sure no dust or hairs were left. The surface needs to be completely dry before applying paint!

5️⃣ Tape the glass? You can if you want, but I didn’t bother. If you do get paint on the glass, you can just scrape it off later!

6️⃣ Paint away: I used Makeit Rust UPVC paint in Black Sand Matt. No primer needed, which is ideal! I used this same paint on the exterior of my French doors last year, and they’re still looking fab.

👉 If you’re using a different paint, I’d recommend priming with Zinsser BIN first—two coats, sanding in between, before you start with the color.

7️⃣ Brush & roller combo:I used a brush for the edges, then a foam roller for the bigger areas. If you get brush streaks, just roll over them with the foam roller, and it smooths right out.

DIY outdoor table with @thehairpinlegco

I’m beyond proud of myself for creating this outdoor table!

I used the 180cm outdoor quad frame from @thehairpinlegco (gifted) and topped it with five scaffold boards. It was surprisingly easy to put together! The base is incredibly sturdy, which was essential since we needed a large table to match our long outdoor seating area. I’ve always wanted to try wood stain stripes, and I’m thrilled with how they turned out.

Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Build the Frame

First, I assembled the outdoor quad frame. The instructions were straightforward, and the frame came together quickly. Once the frame was complete, I double-checked everything to ensure it was level and stable.

Step 2: Prepare and Attach the Boards

I used five scaffold boards for the table top. Before attaching them, I laid them out on the frame to make sure they fit perfectly and to decide on the best arrangement of the wood grain. Once I was satisfied, I secured the boards to the frame with screws, making sure each board was tightly fastened.

Step 3: Sand the Surface

With the boards securely attached, I sanded the entire surface of the table. I started with a coarse grit sandpaper to remove any rough spots and followed up with a finer grit to achieve a smooth finish. This step is crucial for ensuring a nice, even surface, especially when you’re planning to stain the wood. *side note* if doing this again I’d of probably sanded the boards before attaching, but we live and learn!

Step 4: Stain the Wood

After sanding, I wiped down the table to remove any dust. Then, I applied the wood stain. I’ve always wanted to try a striped pattern, so I carefully taped off sections of the wood to create clean lines. I used different shades of stain for the stripes, applying each one evenly and allowing it to dry between coats. I finished off with a uv resistant clear varnish.

How to make the most of these features 👇

If you’re blessed with beautiful bay windows and a feature of a chimney breast then working out your layout can be a bit tricky! Here’s three living room layouts to help make furniture placement easier!

When it comes to chimney breasts they act as a superb focal point. Place symmetrical furniture, such as matching shelves or cabinets, on either side to create balance. A large mirror or artwork above the fireplace can draw the eye upwards, making the space feel larger.

Avoid putting your TV above a fireplace, especially if it’s a working fire. The heat can damage your tv and is usually placed too high for comfortable viewing.

Try putting your tv in one of the alcoves or on the opposite wall, this will prevent the tv being a focal point.

Think about how you will move through the room, older property’s that have chimney breasts and bays most probably have doors open into the room rather than against the wall (this was due to privacy reasons) , try swinging the door the other way (against the wall) this will give you a clearer walking path.

Bay windows are a tricky one to get right, if curtains are your thing there are great options for curved curtain poles or curtain tracks. Roman blinds look great especially on curved bays.

Try to follow the shape of your bay window, if you’re working with a square bay window then a sofa can look great but leave some room behind and at the sides. If your working with a curved bay a sofa will look unbalanced against the curve, try placing an arm chair or love seat instead.
